Journaling
Spiritual journaling grows out of reflection, contemplation, and prayer. It is an open expression through writing or some art form of one’s insights and observations about God, oneself, and what is transpiring in one’s relationship with Jesus Christ.
There are many kinds of journaling:
- Writing about what happened in your life during the day or the previous day
- Reflecting on a passage of scripture
- Observing your surroundings, such as nature or people, then spending time writing about what you have observed
- Writing a prayer to God, which can include your thoughts, feelings, motivations, etc.
- Reflecting on who God is, and then writing words of adoration, praise, thanksgiving, etc.
- Detailing confession about specific sin that you are struggling with
- Listening to what God is saying to you at the present time and writing down what you sense this is
- Writing a story or narrative about events in your life
- Recording evidence of God’s presence and activity in your personal or work life
- Creative writing such as poems
How does one journal? It is often helpful to read the journals of others, many of which have even been published. It might also be helpful to interact with others who journal. Feel free to experiment and find your own style. Even if you do not like writing, try some form of journaling realizing that it may never be a significant part of your spiritual life.
- Some people never journal because they don’t have a place to write their thoughts. You might benefit from buying a small spiral bound pad of paper or an actual journal sold at many bookstores so you have a specific place to record your thoughts.
- It is helpful to start small. At the conclusion of a time with God, spend a few minutes jotting down thoughts and feelings that come to mind.
- Whenever you come across a quote, verse, phrase, or idea that had an impact on your life, write it down in your journal. In this way it can become a treasure chest of your spiritual growth.
