The health of any church, business or organization has a lot to do with the character and resourcefulness of its leaders. This reality motivates Dan to help leaders engage perspectives, practices and connections that enable them to flourish and to rise to their potential as agents of Christ’s goodness in the world. As he moves in this “calling,” Dan regularly enjoys the privilege of seeing a given leader rediscover joy and deeper satisfaction in the outworking of their own unique calling.

Dan draws upon 30+ years of experience in cross-cultural ministry, pastoring and church planting (much of that with Communitas International). He is professionally trained as a coach through Creative Results Management and is credentialed at the ACC level by the International Coach Federation (ICF). In his coaching, Dan often utilizes his familiarity/training in the EQi-2.0 assessment instrument as a way to help leaders improve in 16 factors related to emotional intelligence.

Dan is the primary author of several current books, around which he also coaches, mentors, trains and teaches: Dynamic Adventure: A Guide to Starting and Shaping Missional Churches (Centennial CO; Communitas, 2017). Growing Local Missionaries: Equipping Churches to Sow Shalom in Their Own Cultural Backyard (Portland, OR: Urban Loft, 2014); and Grow Where You’re Planted: Collected Stories on the Hallmarks of Maturing Church (Portland OR: Christian Associates Press, 2013). He earned a Doctor of Ministry (DMIN) in Leadership in the Emerging
Culture at George Fox University’s Portland Seminary, where he also serves as an Adjunct.

Dan and his much-loved spouse of 27 years, Ann, live in Portland OR, where they enjoy spending time with their two daughters, a handful of green-minded friends, and many Jesus-loving practitioners seeking the enrichment of their city and region. He is a restless soul who is ever trying to re-discover a deeper rest in the experienced love of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
